Wildland firefighters put their lives on the line to contain fires and save communities, infrastructure and ecosystems. But if they develop life-threatening illnesses associated with smoke exposure, many arent eligible for the same presumptive compensation available to their urban colleagues.
Blood Cancer
Thanks to medical breakthroughs, we’re able to cure more and more kids of pediatric cancer. “It’s great that they are done with their treatment and cured of whatever their disease is, but there are long-term effects related to the treatment,” said Lee Health Nurse Practitioner Pam Bolton.About 60-70% of these kids will have at least one late effect because of their treatment. “Certain chemotherapies are known to cause certain late effects. Certain radiation therapies are known to cause certain late effects and they’re all based on dose as well as location,” said Bolton. It’s why Lee Health offers a long term follow up clinic called the pediatric after cancer experience for monitoring. “They get the screening that they are recommended to have and that they are getting the services they need if indeed they do experience late effects from treatment,” said Bolton. They’ve been able to treat nearly 1,000 patients over the past 30 years. It’s meant for people who had any chemo or radiation therapy, or transplants. One of Bolton’s missions is to help simplify the process for these patients. “Our goal is to try to coordinate that care for those patients so that they’re not having to get seen on multiple different days by multiple different physicians and then multiple different days to get their tests done,” said Bolton. Curing childhood cancer and then ensuring our patients can live a happy and healthy life.
