Mayo Clinic Minute: Common myths about epilepsy and kids [Video]

Epilepsy is one of the more common neurologic disorders in children. About 1 in 26 people have epilepsy, and 1 in 10 people will have at least one seizure in their lifetime.Dr. Anthony Fine, a pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at Mayo Clinic, says even though it’s fairly common in children, there are a few misconceptions when it comes to epilepsy and kids.Epilepsy can be a challenge to diagnose in children because not all seizures are the same. There are other types of seizures, such as absent seizures, where a child may blank out for a few seconds or minutes, and then go back to activity.Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Anthony Fine says, for many children, there are treatments to control seizures. He says a common misconception is that ADHD medications can cause seizures, and children who have epilepsy and ADHD should avoid them.___________________________________________FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: Register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/re… to access clean and nat sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/Mayo Clinic https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ Follow Mayo Clinic on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MayoClinic

Bispecific Antibodies: Early Side Effects [Video]

Dr. Joseph Mikhael, IMF Chief Medical Officer, guides viewers through the side effects they can expect within the first month of bispecific myeloma treatment. 🩺 Bispecific Antibodies in Myeloma Treatment: Bispecific antibodies are used to treat myeloma by engaging myeloma cells and local immune cells, such as T-cells, to destroy the cancer.🩺 Early Side Effects: The text reviews early side effects of bispecific antibody therapy, which can occur within the first month of treatment.🩺 Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS): CRS is a systemic immune system overreaction to immunotherapy, classified into grades 1 to 4 based on symptoms. Most cases are manageable, but severe CRS (grades 3 and 4) may require intensive care.🩺 CRS Management: CRS typically occurs with the initial doses of bispecifics, and step-up dosing strategies are used to reduce the risk. Management options include close observation, fluids, tocilizumab, and steroids.🩺 Neurological Side Effects: Neurological side effects, such as ICANS, can occur, with symptoms like difficulty speaking, tremors, confusion, and coma. These may be less common but require careful monitoring.🩺 ICANS Management: ICANS occurs in less than 10% of patients receiving bispecific antibodies and is treatable with fluids, steroids, and tocilizumab.🩺 Racial and Ethnic Differences: The effects of these therapies may vary based on a person’s race or ethnicity, with ongoing research to optimize treatment.🩺 Future Approaches: Prophylactic measures, like using drugs such as Tocilizumab to prevent CRS and ICANS, are being explored, aiming to maximize benefits and minimize side effects in myeloma treatment with bispecific antibodies.Supported by Janssen Oncology_______________Improving Lives | Finding the CureFounded in 1990, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is the first and largest organization focusing specifically on multiple myeloma.
