Television legend Esther Rantzen, 82, reveals lung cancer has reached Stage 4 after announcing diagnosis in January – but says she is ‘grateful’ for her long life and six-decade career

Dame Esther Rantzen was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, it has been revealed today, as she spoke out about her treatment for the first time.

The 82-year-old broadcaster, long-time activist and founder of charities Childline and The Silver Line revealed she had cancer in January, simply saying it had ‘since spread’. 

The mother-of-three and grandmother-of-five said at the time she had decided to announce the news because she found ‘it difficult to skulk around various hospitals wearing an unconvincing disguise.’

She is currently being treated with a new cancer medication and is due to have a scan ‘soon’ which will show whether or not the treatment is working.
