Managing tolerability in elderly HER2+ breast cancer

Akihiko Shimomura, MD, PhD, National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, emphasizes the importance of considering tolerability in the management of elderly patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer. He discusses the distinction between fit and frail patients, highlighting the need for a geriatric assessment tool to evaluate their ability to tolerate treatment. Despite the existence of such tools, Dr Shimomura notes that they are not widely used in daily practice. He emphasizes the significance of implementing these assessments to improve the overall treatment of older patients with breast cancer. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
