Michael has been a surfer since before the “Slip, Slop, Slap’ era, and unfortunately, the sun caused him some significant damage. Michael had a melanoma in his face that was going to require intense surgery to treat.
However, thanks to doctors at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse (a cancer treatment centre based in Sydney), Michael was put on an immunotherapy regime that treated the cancer- saving him from enduring life-altering facial surgery.
Immunotherapy, coupled with traditional methods of cancer treatment, means that patients can have a more tailored treatment plan, and sometimes avoid surgery entirely. In Michael’s case- the immunotherapy resulted in the cancer being completely removed, and no surgery was required- you couldn’t possibly ask for a better outcome.
