Michail Ignatiadis, MD, PhD, Jules Bordet Institute, Brussels, Belgium, discusses the use of checkpoint inhibitors to treat breast cancer. Concordant with the results of the KEYNOTE-522 (NCT03036488) and KEYNOTE-756 (NCT03725059) trials, checkpoint inhibitors are currently used alongside chemotherapy as neoadjuvant treatment for PD-L1 positive, metastatic, triple negative breast cancer and early-stage ER+/HER2− breast cancer. However the Phase III IMpassion030 trial (NCT03498716) shows checkpoint inhibitors provide no benefit when paired with standard adjuvant therapy for triple negative patients after surgery. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and checkpoint inhibitors should be sought for patients with stage II breast cancer prior to surgery.
