Hey Red Sox Nation, news coming your way! The Boston Red Sox have just inked a deal with veteran right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks, pending a physical examination.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the contract is worth $10 million guaranteed over two years. The deal was first reported by Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.

Hendriks, a three-time All-Star from 2019 to 2022, is one of baseball’s most dominant closers. During this period, he posted an impressive 2.26 ERA over 239 innings while striking out 359 batters.

In addition to his on-field prowess, Hendriks displayed incredible resilience off the field. After being diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, he battled back to the mound in May 2023, earning AL Comeback Player of the Year honors despite pitching just five innings.

However, adversity struck again when he underwent Tommy John surgery in June after tearing his UCL.

The Perth, Australia native is currently recovering from elbow surgery and aims to be back to full strength by the trade deadline, as reported by Cotillo. Hendriks set a deadline to sign with a team before Thursday to ensure he’d be ready for a return.

This signing adds depth to the Red Sox bullpen, especially with Craig Breslow, the director of baseball, also signing Michael Fulmer, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, earlier this offseason.

With key relievers Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin becoming free agents after the season, Hendriks could play a crucial role for the team in 2025.
