5-year-old with leukemia receives special celebration for final chemo treatment [Video]

WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) – A 5-year-old Rhode Island girl just marked a major milestone.

Amelia Bernard has been battling leukemia for more than two years.

On Monday, she had her last chemotherapy treatment at the hospital. Family, friends and first responders turned out to give her a huge sendoff.

A significant sign sitting outside of the Bernard family home in Warwick served as a declaration for the day they have been waiting for.

“I did not sleep. I don’t think anyone slept,” Carly Bernard, Amelia’s mother, said.

Up until that point, there were lots of sleepless nights, but unlike on Monday, it was for other reasons.

At the age of 3 years old, on World Cancer Day, Amelia was diagnosed with leukemia.

“It was shocking and devastating, and the whole world stopped,” Bernard remembered.
