Breast cancer patient experience informing treatment studies

Shelley Potter, MBChB, PhD, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK, discusses how patients’ experiences of early breast cancer treatment can be used to inform future studies. Personalization of breast cancer treatment may improve its effectiveness and tolerability. An international survey of patients with breast cancer asked which treatments would they avoid receiving, if safe to do so, and why. Chemotherapy was the most mentioned treatment, followed by endocrine treatment, then surgery, and radiotherapy was the least avoided. Patients support personalization of treatment, but not at any detriment to survival. This interview took place at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC) in Milan, Italy.
