This project aims to understand the interplay between obesity and female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, in CRC development. Although research indicates estrogen protects females from CRC despite obesity, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Furthermore, the role of progesterone in obesity-induced CRC remains undefined. The research findings will advance graduate student research at Miami University and the understanding of sex-different physiology in CRC and propose individualized, sex-specific cancer prevention and treatment strategies.
This project will be beneficial in raising awareness around obesity and CRC, and deriving the development of sex-specific health policies and intervention strategies. Thus, it will not only prove beneficial to Miami, but can also be beneficial for people and the healthcare sector around the world. Additionally, such cutting-edge research can help Miami maintain a leading position in the scientific community. (Grant Request: $20,000)
