Pancreatic Cancer

Daryl Stovall played two sports at Creighton, was drafted by the pros in one and signed as a free agent in the other.

He also was offered a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys, although the Bellevue West product hadn’t played football since junior high school.

The Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Famer died Wednesday from pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Stovall was a three-year starter at CU in basketball, scoring 1,115 points from 1978-1982, and in baseball, setting a freshman record with nine home runs. He averaged .265 and banged 19 home runs before bypassing his senior season with the Jays.

The San Diego Clippers took him in the 10th round of the 1982 NBA draft, later than he had anticipated. A week later, after a tryout, the Chicago White Sox signed him to a minor league contract and he played 17 games in the Gulf Coast rookie league.
