E4112: MRI and gene expression optimization of local therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ

Seema Khan, MD, Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL, discusses data coming from a prospective, single arm, multicenter study evaluating the impact of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 12-gene expression assay on the optimization of radiotherapy for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This analysis included ipsilateral breast events (IBE) at 5-years. The 5 year IBE rate was reported as similar between the low DCIS Score (DS) group treated with wide local excision (WLE) alone versus the inter/hi DS group treated with WLE and radiation. Prior studies have shown a marked difference in IBE rates by DS with excision alone. Therefore, this study supports omitting radiotherapy post-surgery in DCIS patients with low DS, and it’s use in patients with inter/hi DS. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
