From a book to a composition, cancer patients story becomes a song [Video]

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Mount St. Joseph University performed a special concert this week as a collaboration between The Cure Starts Now and Sing Me a Story.

Part of the concert featured an original composition created from a book written by seven-year-old Ashton Hawkins.

“When we asked the girls [Amanda’s daughters] what they wanted to write about it was unicorns, rainbows and cotton candy,” said Ashton’s mom Amanda Hawkins, “And the story came together, they all wrote it together, they illustrated it together and they absolutely had a blast doing it.”

Amanda said she was moved to tears when she heard what student Austin Gray created and the way the band was able to bring the story to life through music.

“I had to make sure it was in my mind perfect for Ashton and her family,” says MSJ Music Education Major Austin Gray and composer, “I don’t like perfection but for this I wanted it to be perfect.”
