Bladder cancer makes up about 4% of cancers in the US. It is the fourth most common cancer in men, but it’s less common in women. It starts in the lining of your bladder, a small hollow organ that holds your urine. In this Health Watch video, hear from Jennifer Yates, MD, UMass Memorial urologist, about the different types of bladder cancers, risk factors and treatment options. Because smoking causes about 50% of bladder cancers, this is the biggest modifiable risk factor and can help prevent onset. Other risk factors include occupational exposures and a genetic or family history.
