Here’s what medical cannabis will look like in Lexington KY [Video]

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — We’re learning more about how the city of Lexington will handle the legalization of medical marijuana.

The General Assembly voted in 2023 to approve medical marijuana starting Jan. 1, 2025.

The new law prohibits producers and dispensaries within 1,000 feet of elementary schools and daycares. All growing also has to be done indoors.

“So we could not come back and say, ‘You can grow it; you can grow it outside’ because the state has made it clear that we can’t do that,” Susan Speckert, commissioner of law, said during Tuesday’s council work session. “This is a brand new industry. There are a lot of pieces to it. So these issues are kind of being tackled by the state as they arise.”

Local governments can also choose to opt out of the state’s medical cannabis program.
