How to check your moles #doctor #medicine #health #education #learn #skin

Moles, or nevi, are just a collection of cells (melanocytes) that produce a coloured pigment (melanin).

They can be there from the start of life, but can also form throughout our life. They’re present in all skin colours and a normal part of our body.

However, the same cells that form moles can become cancerous. This is a melanoma.

Rates of melanomas are on the rise, so prevention via sun safety is key.

Early recognition is also very important. Over 99% of patients will be cured with excision alone if caught before it spreads.

Do a good skin check once per month, and keep an eye on your moles. Use the ABCDE tool to see if any look odd and keep track of photos.

Remember, ABCDE is a useful tool, but having one or more features doesn’t mean a mole is definitely melanoma! If in doubt, get it checked out.
