Im not afraid: Mother of 5 with terminal cancer is preparing to say goodbye [Video]

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. (WUSA) – From her hospital bed, 34-year-old Kourtni Smith is preparing to say goodbye.

She was told she wouldn’t make it past Christmas, but she’s still here, in out and of hospitals, and advocating for changes to cancer screenings.

“It’s been a roller coaster. I’m so tired of being here in this hospital,” Smith said. “I’m tired.”

Smith was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive lobular carcinoma, a type of breast cancer, in 2021.

She has been trying to make the most of her time left with her husband and their five children between hospital visits.

“We did Disney for Christmas. Walking around the park was not easy but I pushed myself for them,” she said.

Smith said she has wanted agencies to recommend a lower mammogram age in hopes of others being able to get diagnosed earlier.

Recently, the United States Preventive Services Task Force finalized new updated recommendations with screenings recommended to start at the age of 40.
