Hello, my name’s Kathryn Karem. I’m a nurse practitioner at the Norton Prompt Cares, and the reason I’m a nurse practitioner is because I have a history of ER and ICU nursing, and I like the fast-paced environment that the Prompt Cares provide us and the variety that they bring.

So when the patient is having a high stress situation, the best is to keep them calm by my presence and aura and my voice, alongside there’s something that I like to reference as the art of nursing. By being present with them, comforting them, especially in high stress situations that’s crucial, because you being human to human with them is going to calm them the best way possible.

I’m a military brat, however, I’ve been here since 2005 and I’ve grown up here and call Louisville my home. I went to Assumption High School, then onto Bellarmine University for my Bachelor’s of Science and Nursing. While I was working on my undergrad, I was an EMT with Bellarmine and the Louisville EMS.

Then when I graduated, I went to Norton Children’s for neonatal ICU, and while I got my degree at Bellarmine University for my master’s in nurse practitioner, I then went to UK in neurosurgery where I specialized in pediatric and adult spinal problems. Specifically, I’ve dealt with VP shunts, I’ve dealt with neuro spinal modulation, which is also known as a spinal cord stimulator, and an intrathecal pain and back lifting pump for a spinal cord injury in our chronic pain patients.

I really enjoy reading and I really enjoy hiking, depending on my mood, and if I’m more of an active mood, I really enjoy using the Norton Walking Club at the Louisville Zoo before they open. If I’m more of a relaxed mood, I really enjoy reading, specifically young adult [inaudible 00:01:47]
