Kids Shouldn’t Have to Suffer as They Await Treatment [Video]

When unnecessary delays prevent kids from getting timely medical care, the effects on a child can be dangerous and long-lasting. Alexander Bassuk, MD, physician-in-chief at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, explained one child’s experience. Dr. Bassuk’s facility had a state-of-the-art treatment available to treat a child with intractable epilepsy. But paperwork involving the Medicaid program in the child’s home state delayed treatment. The result? Even though doctors were ready to treat the child, the child had to continue to wait – and continue suffering from seizures – as paperwork was processed.
