Earlier this month, Nebraska lawmakers gave final-round approval to a bill that changes state law to recognize tribal court orders to place residents of Native reservations under emergency protective custody — putting tribal judges on the same plane as state courts when it comes to civil commitments.

The Legislature voted on April 11 to send Sen. Jane Raybould’s bill to the desk of Gov. Jim Pillen, who later signed the legislation that Raybould said was “the issue that mattered … the most” to Omaha Tribe of Nebraska elders, who Raybould visited in Macy ahead of this year’s legislative session along with two other state senators.
