Local doctor discusses how colorectal cancer is affecting younger age groups [Video]

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Screening for colorectal cancer is generally advised for people between the ages of 45 and 75, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Sarah Fox, with Novant Health, spoke with WECT about the risks associated with colorectal cancer and how those younger than 45 can also be affected.

“I have actually diagnosed an 18-year-old with a rectal cancer, and I had one week where I had all of my patients were under 40,” Dr. Fox said. “And it was it was really devastating.”

The good news, though, is that people of all ages can practice important prevention methods.

“So the very best things are to stay active, to eat a high fiber diet with lots of fruits and veggies, lean proteins, try and stay away from processed food,” Dr. Fox said. “Beverages that have lots of sugar in them are definitely one of the triggers.
