CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Lowcountry medical officials promote early lung cancer screening during Lung Cancer Action Week.
This week, the cause raises awareness and encourages residents to take action against the disease.
Charleston Mayor William Cogswell declared the second week of May as Lung Cancer Action Week. Cogswell’s proclamation encourages everyone to learn more about the disease and early detection.
Lung cancer is common in men and women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the criteria for patients are ages between 50 to 80 years old, current smokers, a 20-pack or more smoking history or have quit in the past 15 years.
The American Lung Cancer Society states early detection screening increases survivability of five more years by 63%. Trident Medical Center offers low-dose CT screenings to find abnormal growth like lung nodules in patients that meet the criteria.
