My Child Has Leukemia: Sarah’s Story | Hometown Heroes

“My Child Has Leukemia!” In this heartfelt episode of Hometown Heroes, we are joined by Sarah Poole, co-owner of SophieMacs, and a mother who has been through an incredibly challenging journey. Sarah shares her story of her daughter Mackenzie’s battle with leukemia and how it has changed their lives forever.

When Sarah’s daughter Mackenzie was just 22 months old, she was diagnosed with leukemia. As a parent, hearing the words “my child has leukemia” is devastating, and Sarah’s world was turned upside down. She shares the emotional rollercoaster of the diagnosis, the countless hospital visits, and the uncertainty that comes with having a child with cancer.

Throughout Mackenzie’s battle with leukemia, Sarah found herself feeling isolated and alone, as few people could truly understand what she was going through. However, she found strength in her faith, her family, and the incredible support from the community.

Sarah’s friend, the host of Hometown Heroes, started a fundraiser to help Sarah and her family during this difficult time. The outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and even strangers was overwhelming and helped them navigate the financial and emotional challenges of having a child with leukemia.

Despite the hardships, Sarah shares how Mackenzie’s resilience and bravery throughout her treatment were truly inspiring. On February 14th, 2023, Mackenzie rang the bell at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, signifying the end of her cancer treatment and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

Now, Sarah is using her experience to help others who are going through similar situations. As a co-owner of SophieMacs, an upscale consignment shop, Sarah is dedicated to giving back to the community and raising awareness for pediatric cancer. The store’s signature color is orange, representing the leukemia awareness ribbon, and they have a gumball machine where all proceeds benefit childhood cancer research.

In this episode, we also learn about an incredible toy drive for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, organized by Sarah and the host of Hometown Heroes. The impact of these toys on children battling cancer cannot be overstated, as they provide a source of joy and comfort during an unimaginably difficult time.

If you or someone you know has a child with leukemia or any other childhood cancer, Sarah wants you to know that you are not alone. She is always available to listen, offer support, and share her experiences to help others navigate this challenging journey.
