HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A fundraiser was held at Nick’s Nest in Holyoke on Wednesday evening, raising money for a police officer’s young son who is battling cancer.

Baby Ashton is the son of Holyoke Police Officer Crystal Conroy.

He was diagnosed this month with acute myeloid leukemia.

The 11-month-old is currently receiving treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital. Western Mass News stopped by the event and spoke with residents who said they were happy to come out and support the cause, including Sal Canata, who said, “Holyoke’s a pretty tight knit community and when one of own needs help, usually people gather around even if you don’t know the family. We don’t know the family but we know if we had an 11-month-old fighting a deadly disease like leukemia, they could use all the support they could have.”

Half of Wednesday’s overall ice cream profits went directly to supporting little Ashton’s medical expenses.
