Remotely delivered cancer genetic testing in the Making Genetic Testing Accessible (MAGENTA) trial

Elizabeth Swisher, MD, University of Washington in Seattle, WA, discusses the MAGENTA (Making Genetic Testing Accessible) trial (NCT02993068), which aimed to make genetic testing more accessible through remote delivery. The trial enrolled nearly 4000 individuals at risk for breast or ovarian cancer and randomized them to receive varying levels of genetic counseling before and after testing. Results showed that not requiring pre and post-test counseling did not increase psychological distress for patients and led to higher completion rates. This suggests that mandatory genetic counseling may pose a barrier to some patients. This interview took place at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2024 in San Diego, CA.
