SC Senate passes medical marijuana bill, sends it to the House [Video]

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — The Senate approved Senator Tom Davis’ Compassionate Care Act bill 24-19 Wednesday with a bipartisan mix of yes and no votes. It would legalize medical marijuana in the state of South Carolina. In the past week leading up to the approval, local leaders voiced their concerns.

“I think it’s one of the worst things that could happen to South Carolina, certainly the Upstate which is my concern, so I think it’s horrible and again I couldn’t be more disappointed,” said Sheriff Hobart Lewis, Greenville County Sheriff. 

Senator Davis said he has created one of the most restrictive medical marijuana programs in the country. The bill would not allow smoking the drug, but would allow oil, salves, patches or vaporizers instead.

The illnesses that can be treated are listed in the bill, and include cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, sickle cell anemia, autism and some post-traumatic stress disorder …
