Skin cancer can take on a variety of appearances, but there are some common visual characteristics to be aware of:

Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, often appears as an asymmetrical mole with irregular borders, multiple colors (black, brown, red, white, or blue), and a diameter larger than 6 millimeters. The surface may be raised and have an uneven texture. Melanomas can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new abnormal growth on the skin.

Basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, typically presents as a small, pearly or waxy bump that may have a central indentation or ulcer. It’s often pink, red, or flesh-toned in color. Basal cell carcinomas are usually found on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face, head, and neck.

Squamous cell carcinoma may appear as a firm, red nodule or a flat, scaly patch. The surface can be rough, crusty, or ulcerated. This type of skin cancer is commonly found on the face, ears, neck, hands, and other sun-exposed areas.

Regardless of the specific type, any new, changing, or unusual growth on the skin should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Early detection and treatment are crucial for the successful management of skin cancer.
