Sparrow doctors find new way to tackle lung cancer with robotic help [Video]

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Sparrow doctors are combining techniques and procedures to give lung cancer patients an advantage in fighting the disease.

Hospital officials say since 2022, Sparrow was the first hospital in Mid-Michigan to perform a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy.

Physicians say it would usually take weeks to a month to separately schedule and undergo a bronchoscopy and surgery.  But not anymore.

The procedure is now combined with the work done by robotic thoracic surgeons resulting in an ability to remove infected tissue in the same operation.

When a patient is screened for lung cancer and is eligible, a pulmonologist can mark the cancer mass in the lungs. Then, a surgeon steps in and carefully removes infected tissue.

The minimally invasive procedure is more accurate and saves time both in treatment and patient recovery, according to doctors.
