Success of contralateral mastectomy in patients with unilateral breast cancer [Video]

Shelley Potter, MBChB, PhD, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK, outlines the findings of a systematic review on patients with unilateral breast cancer who undergo contralateral mastectomy. Most patients in need of a unilateral mastectomy report a preference for having a symmetrical chest. Breast reconstruction is routinely offered to achieve symmetry, but contralateral mastectomy is not. A systematic review of patient outcomes for elected contralateral mastectomy showed that complications from having two mastectomies were lower than having reconstruction, and regret over the decision was relatively low. This interview took place at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC) in Milan, Italy.
