UMaine ‘Spirit Week’ encouraging student service efforts | Local News [Video]

ORONO — The University of Maine is known for its historic volunteer-centered holiday known as ‘Maine Day’ that lands on the last Wednesday in April. This past year it went through a major transformation to discourage students from participating in off-campus gatherings and encourage more service efforts. 

All week long students at the university have been participating in various service and philanthropic efforts for ‘spirit week.’ from raking leaves to shaving heads for childhood cancer funds.  

Students were seen Wednesday raising funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancer. 

“This is our 14th annual UMaine Shaving Saves event…in total over the past 14 years we have raised 114 thousand dollars and shaved 662 heads,” said Jasper Mackowski with the University of Maine Chapter for Circle K International, the largest collegiate service organization.
