UT Medical Center introduces cutting edge cancer treatment [Video]

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – There are only 30 hospitals in the country that offer a newly FDA-approved T-cell treatment for cancer, and the University of Tennessee Medical Center is one of them.

According to UTMC’s Joshua Hickman, the hospital and Dr. Renju Raj began working on a clinical trial back in 2021 to find ways to treat metastatic melanoma.

“There are not any other good treatments for these patients at all,” said Dr. Raj.

Dr. Raj said this treatment is for patients with metastatic melanoma who have already gone through multiple other forms of treatment without success.

Through this new treatment process, UTMC staff are able to take the cells that your body naturally produces to fight cancer, reproduce more of the effective cells, and inject them back into a patient with the hopes of reducing or eliminating the tumor altogether.
