Vacuum assisted biopsy instead of surgery in breast cancer

Nisha Sharma, MBChB, MRCP, FRCR, The Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, Leeds, UK, discusses the use of vacuum assisted biopsy as an alternative to surgery in breast cancer. High risk breast cancer lesions are managed with surgery, despite usually being benign or requiring a second surgery for margin assessment. Tumors may be over-diagnosed as cancerous and receive surgical and adjuvant treatment as a result. Patients with complete imaging response to chemotherapy are still followed up with surgery. Using vacuum assisted biopsies instead of surgery in such cases can reduce the treatment burden in patients. This interview took place at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC) in Milan, Italy.
