The hot summer months are upon us and with that comes harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Experts say you could be at risk and not even know it.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to educate yourself on the dangers of this disease.

One local survivor says it’s important to do so because melanoma can strike when you least expect it.

Years ago, a stranger stopped Kit Wallace and asked if she’d had a mole on her back checked out. Little did Wallace know, that mole, would change her life.

“It was the first time in my life I dropped down to my knees,” Wallace explained. “I had stage one melanoma.”

Only 26-years-old at the time and pregnant with her daughter, Wallace never thought it would happen to her.
