Why should consolidation radiotherapy be used in stage IV lung cancer? [Video]

Puneeth Iyengar, MD, PhD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, outlines the rationale for supporting the use of consolidation radiotherapy in stage IV lung cancer. The current course of treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) involves a combination of systemic therapies and local therapies. Despite constant improvement of systemic therapies, NSCLC is likely to return at the site of gross disease. Promising results of a Phase II trial (NCT02045446) and an incomplete Phase II/III trial (NCT03137771) support use of radiotherapy at the time of consolidation. A small subset of oligometastatic patients may also benefit from localized radiotherapy at consolidation.
