CDC: Costs, social isolation keep women from getting mammograms [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A new CDC study finds that women aren’t getting regular mammograms because they can’t afford it.

It’s a financial domino effect.

Researchers found that women with health-related social needs were 20% less likely to get recommended mammograms.

Not getting mammograms is one piece of it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found those same women struggle with having food to eat or they’re also not able to pay for their healthcare.

Other factors can involve social isolation, unemployment, lack of reliable transportation, and healthcare costs in general.

Researchers say addressing these issues through community and public health services will help save the lives of women through early breast cancer detection.
