CDC study shows cost barriers keep women from getting mammograms [Video]

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) – When it comes to detecting breast cancer at all stages, mammograms rank number one on the list of life-saving screenings.

A new study from the CDC found that only about 65% of women ages 50-74 are not up to date on their mammograms, and the main barriers are cost and access.

“Definitely not surprising, alarming just because that’s just so many more that we can screen and catch for breast cancer, and hopefully treat and cure,” said Dr. Ashleigh Clickett with Valley Health.

Clickett says access is a problem she’s seen to be very prevalent here.

“People with no insurance or transportation, and those two things are a large problem in our area and something we have to overcome,” she said.

Clickett says access starts with asking a doctor.

“What can I do to get my mammogram if I don’t have health insurance, if I don’t have transportation,” she said. “Ask them about options …
