In a tense and somewhat chaotic press conference on Thursday, President Joe Biden passionately responded to a Republican prosecutor’s assertion that he has memory lapses. The president particularly criticized aspects of the report released earlier in the day by Justice Department special counsel Robert Hur, which investigated his handling of classified documents. Biden became notably angered by a suggestion that he couldn’t recall the year his late son, Beau Biden, passed away from brain cancer.

Later, while discussing the conflict in the Middle East, Biden seemed to mix up Mexico with Egypt, stating, “The president of Mexico did not want to open up the gate to allow humanitarian material to get in. I talked to him. I convinced him to open the gate.”

Hur’s report ultimately determined that Biden would not face charges for “wilfully” retaining documents after his term as vice president under Barack Obama ended in January 2017. The report highlighted that these materials included files on military policy in Afghanistan and handwritten notes on national security. It also suggested that Biden might appear as an “elderly man with a poor memory” to a jury if faced with criminal charges.
