Mammogram screening numbers still havent recovered since pandemic [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It’s the second-leading cause of death among women after lung cancer and and 6,000 women will be diagnosed in Missouri this year.

The pandemic had a tremendous impact on the ability of people to get mammograms. And even years after the lockdown and return to some sense of normalcy, the numbers on breast cancer screenings are still down.

“During the pandemic it was cut-off so basically 100 percent of people were not getting screened,” said Dr. Amanda Lackey, the co-owner and radiologist for Breast Imaging of the Ozarks. “It was really slow to recover and we’re still not back to that level yet. We’re still about 44 percent lower than we should be and I’ve seen this in practice every day. We’re still seeing women who haven’t had a mammogram since the …
