Meta-analysis: axillary surgery impact in breast cancer treatment outcomes

Gurdeep S. Mannu, MD, from the University of Oxford, UK, discusses the results of an individual patient data meta-analysis involving over 20,000 women from nearly 30 randomized controlled trials focusing on axillary treatment in breast cancer. The trials span from the 1950s to the present, covering various approaches, including central node biopsy and randomized surgery decisions. The study aims to consolidate evidence from different eras into one comprehensive analysis. The findings suggest that more surgery to the axilla increases the risk of lymphedema without providing significant benefits in terms of local recurrence, breast cancer mortality, or overall mortality. However, a notable reduction in isolated axillary recurrences was observed in those receiving more surgery. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
