On Her Mind: Family member’s cancer battle inspires Tulsa woman to donate stem cells | News [Video]

TULSA, Okla. — On last week’s On Her Mind, I introduced you to a Tulsa woman who donated stem cells to a stranger.

Now, I learned how her cousin’s cancer diagnosis as a teen inspired her to register to be a donor and how her cousin feels now, knowing her cousin saved a stranger’s life the same way someone saved her life almost 10 years ago. 

“My cousin Madison was actually diagnosed with AML, acute myeloid leukemia, when she was 15 and I was 16,” said Harlee Karstetter, Executive Producer at FOX23 News. “We were really close, like growing up we always did things together.” 

They treated aggressively with chemotherapy and put her on the list for a bone marrow transplant. 

“She did all these treatments, but ultimately what saved her life was that bone marrow transplant,” Harlee said.
