NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A South Carolina woman is sharing her story of survival after being diagnosed with one of the most visible types of cancer.

Carol Hodges, a 64-year-old retired nurse from Mullins, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in March 2022, after a regularly scheduled trip to the dentist.

“He saw this… it looked like a little ulcer underneath my tongue,” Hodges says. “The tissue started to look raised, almost inflamed underneath that little tiny sore. By that point he said, ‘We’ve got to have a biopsy of this.’”

Hodges felt shocked when she heard the news. From her former experience as a nurse, she did not recall hearing much about this type of cancer.

“I thought it could not happen to me. I’ve never smoked, I’ve never considered myself at risk,” Hodges says. “Cancer knows no prejudice in this world. The moment they say it is …
